Dental care during pregnancy

Hormone changes in pregnancy can make gums swollen and bleed more easily. Routine dental check-ups and cleaning are usually safe and helpful during pregnancy. Please tell us you are pregnant when you book. Ask us about dental care in pregnancy.

Common dental problems in pregnancy

  • Swollen or bleeding gums (pregnancy gingivitis)
  • More cavities from frequent snacking
  • Acid wear from morning sickness
  • Tooth pain from an old cavity or filling

What you can do at home

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily.
  • After vomiting, rinse with water. Wait about 30 minutes before brushing.
  • Choose healthy snacks and limit sweets and sweet drinks.
  • Use a soft toothbrush if gums are sore.

When to see a dentist

  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Tooth pain or a broken tooth
  • Swelling of the gum or face (see us soon)
  • You have not had a check-up recently

How we can help

We plan care around your pregnancy, in discussion with your doctor where needed. Check-ups and cleaning can usually be done safely, and urgent problems like pain or infection should not be ignored. Some treatments may be planned for after the baby is born.
