Soft tissue laser dentistry
At Gentle Touch Dental Clinic, we treat using dental soft tissue lasers. Dr S. Barath Kumar (MDS Endodontics) uses a laser for selected gum and soft tissue procedures. A soft tissue laser is a small dental tool that uses a focused beam of light to gently cut, shape or seal gum and other soft tissue in the mouth.
What a soft tissue laser can be used for
- Gum reshaping (contouring) for a gummy smile or uneven gums
- Frenectomy: releasing a tight tongue-tie or lip-tie
- Gum disease: cleaning deep gum pockets, along with scaling
- Mouth ulcers and cold sores: relief of soreness
- Exposing teeth covered by gum, such as a tooth that has not come through
- Minor soft tissue removal, such as small growths or extra gum

- Often less bleeding during the procedure
- Usually fewer or no stitches
- Often quicker healing
- Local anaesthetic is still used when needed, so you stay comfortable

Common questions
Does laser treatment hurt?
Most people find it comfortable. We use local anaesthetic when needed and explain each step first.
Can a laser treat tongue-tie?
A laser can be used for a frenectomy (tongue-tie or lip-tie release). The dentist checks first whether it is needed.
