Tooth extraction: what to expect and aftercare
Sometimes a tooth cannot be saved and needs to be removed. As root canal specialists, we first check if the tooth can be saved. If removal is the better option, we explain each step and the aftercare. Ask us about tooth extraction.
When a tooth may need removal
- A badly broken or decayed tooth that cannot be repaired
- A very loose tooth from gum disease
- A wisdom tooth that is stuck or causing problems (see wisdom tooth pain)
- Crowding, before braces
- A baby (milk) tooth that is not falling out
Aftercare at home
- Bite on the gauze for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Do not spit, rinse hard or use a straw for 24 hours.
- Eat soft, cool food and chew on the other side.
- Do not smoke for at least 2 to 3 days.
- From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
- Take medicines only as advised.
Call us if you notice
- Bleeding that does not stop after biting on gauze
- Pain that gets worse after 2 to 3 days (this can be dry socket)
- A bad taste or smell from the socket
- Swelling that grows, or fever
How we can help
We examine the tooth and take an X-ray, discuss whether it can be saved, numb the area well, and remove the tooth gently. We also talk about replacing it with an implant, bridge or denture. Read more on oral surgery and wisdom teeth.
Common questions
What is dry socket?
It is when the blood clot in the socket is lost too early, leaving it painful. It usually starts 2 to 3 days after removal. Avoiding spitting, straws and smoking helps prevent it. Call us if it happens.
Will I need to replace the tooth?
Often yes, especially for back teeth and front teeth. We explain the options before removal.
